I really like the way that you merged the wings with the human skin and gave him a very strong-looking upper body...which I'd imagine he'd need for those wings. The tattoo is another good detail, and overall the general figure is cool. I also like how you were able to do that hand--vague so that you didn't have to worry over every little detail, but real enough looking. That's definitely something I could study and learn from. Have you considered drawing a front-view of him?
About the smudging, as far as I'm concerned, if it works, that's all that really matters.
But sometimes I use a tortillion to accomplish the same thing as smudging. It can give you a bit more precise control than using the tips of your fingers, but a similar effect, and that might save you some of those areas where the smudging goes out of the lines. I recommend experimenting with scraps first before doing it on a formal work, though, so you have a good idea of what it's going to look like and what directions to go.
I guess I mistook the muscled upper body. I can see where because of the narrower waist, there's a female appearance. I think that a lot of times, though, if the shoulders seem to be broader than the waist, that can sometimes suggest something masculine. But the musculature does make sense for a winged being.
I do like the drawing a lot, and I'll be interested to see what future versions you might do.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
